U.S. Assay Office, Helena, Montana

Completed in 1875, the U.S. Assay Office was Montana’s first federally recorded building. Gold was weighed, tested, and melted into official bars inside. In 1899, the largest gold bar in the world at the time, weighing 434 pounds, was cast here.
